Fruit Flies and Disease

Posted 7.26.05 - According to researchers in Israel, the Mediterranean fruit fly (a nuisance to the commercial fruit industry) has the capability to contaminate fruits with harmful bacteria to humans.

The Mediterranean fruit fly feeds on animal feces to produce the eggs that it lays in fruits by puncturing the skin and injecting them.

Researchers said that the findings from there study "highlight the potential of the fly to carry human pathogens and to serve as a vector for transmission of food-borne diseases."
