Florida halts entry of South African Clementine oranges

Posted 07.07.05 - In response to the discovery of live larvae from the false codling moth in early June, the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services in Florida placed a temporary ban on the importation and sale of South African Clementine oranges.

Inspections of wholesale and retail markets where the fruit has been sold began during the last week of June. While no live larvae were found, 12 dead larvae were discovered.

In response to the discoveries, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has already changed the treatment protocol for future import of the citrus fruit.
