Request: The following request was received from Harold Coble, USDA's Office of Pest Management Policy: Subject: Benfluralin on Small Seeded Legumes HELP!! EPA is in the process of risk assessment of benfluralin (Balan). I need any info you can find on benfluralin use on small-seeded legumes, particularly alfalfa. It is the only grass material I know of that can be used in establishment of small-seeded legumes. Typical info is needed - where it is used, how much, etc. thanks, Harold Harold D. Response: Forwarded from Dr. Gary Bates. Balan has been used as a pre-emerge in alfalfa for quite a few years. We used to recommend it. People in TN don't currently use it do to a lack of availability in our area. I don't have any data on Balan. Thanks dh

Response: Darrell, Gary Bates may know better than I would, but if you look in page 65 of the 2004 Weed Control Manual For Tennessee, Dr. Rhodes and Greg Breeden do not list Balan as a viable option in Alfalfa - for preemergence grass control Pursuit is used and then follow up with Poast or Select for emerged grasses. So I guess, for Tennessee, loss of Balan in forage crops would not be that big a deal Same would be true for pasture and for fine turf - in pasture not used and in fine turf plenty of other products with stronger residual control. I hope this helps, Best Regards, Darren Robinson

Response: Harold: Good to hear from you. In GA, we have only about 25,000 acres of alfalfa. I estimate we plant about 2,000 acres per year (now mostly for deer food plots). When it is used, Balan 60DF is used at 1.2 lbs. ai/acre. I would guess that it is used on about 50% of the newly planted acreage each year, or about 1,000 acres. Eptam is still labeled for use on alfalfa , and is used on a limited basis as an alternative to Balan. We also use a fair amount of Poast and Poast Plus for grass control in seedling (1st year) alfalfa. Tim Murphy UGA Extension Weed Scientist

Response: We don't have any benfluralin-containing registrations active in FL that deal with the clover or alfalfa in an ag setting. When it comes to small seeded legumes, we just have one that is lawn-related (like a clover lawn - and that is a 4-way). Mark Mossler University of Florida
